The benefits and dangers of YouTube!

ALL of us watch YouTube, or we should, if for some strange reason one happens to be from another solar system.  The wealth of information is incomprehensible at times, but the treasures to be collected are worth the effort.  However, for everything positive there is a negative side, as well.

I would venture that most of us realize martial arts cannot be cultured from video.  One needs “hands-on” training from a qualified instructor, but this is not the purpose of this blog.  Neither is the obvious “there are numerous, unqualified teachers out there, whose methods are simply bad.”

Respecting the Art of Krav Maga

If one learns that a fast and effective strike to the throat of any person, no matter his (or her) size, can collapse a larynx, and even kill, then one also realizes that this works both ways.  Krav Maga teaches us to end a fight as quickly and efficiently as possible, mainly to minimize the time spent in conflict, as ultimately both parties will usually get hurt, to some degree, in any serious fight.

“It won’t happen to me”…well, let’s hope not!

The proverbial “out of sight, out of mind” saying is a well-known and time-honored adage.  Based on empirical data, it is a fact that only 10% of the human population are actual “fighters”; meaning, they will absolutely exchange blows when attacked personally and in order to help others.  One of my training partners, a very tough Marine Special Forces Colonel (ret.), who is experienced enough to have “seen and done everything”, reminds me, as Krav Maga instructors, “it is our duty to train the other 90% to become fighters, and the 10% to become great!”  I agree, most definitely.

Rock Guitarist/Writer/Krav Maga expert…really?

My hair is longer than most martial artists…makes my head gear even tighter.  My right hand’s nails are a bit longer, as well (hybrid picking for all of you non-players), and need to be taped, along with my fingers, for Brazilian JiuJitsu training.  Yet, I am a world-class rock and fusion guitarist, which has been my principal vocation for many years and continues to this day; and, I have had my novels and poetry released everywhere.
